On the morning we've PGA joining us and I'm wondering here golf and it's your second year as manager of the Marlins you know players when they're on their fourth fifth sixth year in baseball they starts up. You know they'd they improved mean improved throughout their career I'm wondering for Don Mattingly how much better a manager are you now than you were a few years ago. I only hope you're better policy experience you're you're more comfortable we've been through more situations on the field. You know basically relationships and your players you you learn from each one of those so. You know you hope you're better. From a Bittermann is that would even last year. What something that you look back get a few years ago and say yeah I I I don't wanna do that anymore that was not the right tactic gore that wasn't the right approach and now you do something different. I'd probably is as much as anything just be you be willing to roll the dice Lamar you know be a little aggressive at times. You always try to play with the guys you have on your club what kind of team that you have. At times we hear you're close to having trouble doing something and struggle and score runs or something that I probably should. You know put guys in motion more be willing to do some things that you don't normally do with those guys. You know last year last year was really an odd year for very obvious reasons and unfortunately had such a tragic ending to it but. For most of the season Don like you guys were really having a terrific year this this season had such a great field to it in my right about that. It really did I mean I think I was here the ending was it was tragic end and devastating forest. But for the most probably the status as a positive year we we went to repair race we are and it really almost until the very end. Like our guys are gonna learn from that and now we're gonna we're going to be a lot better. So you know I think these the fans they're gonna like this group of guys at the same group. I think playing with a lot of confidence I think. Go on to a few last year just kind of committed. The relationships of these guys in and push it different here. Did you feel the need to address the team what everyone got there in Jupiter at it in regards to everything gets a place Vienna last year. And moving forward this year. Just kind of and our little bit not that couldn't. To hammer home I think we all dealt with that last year in the need dealt with in the winner. Bed just kind of take you know in and a small part you know what that meant and how they ended. In good thing that we learned from from Jose. From the standpoint of playing the game oh with a lot of joy. That attitude that we that we take from him and we will learn from map. Does real Marlins skipper Don Mattingly joining us here or does the the impending or the possible I should say not impending does the possible seal. All of the team impact on the player all the manager at all it's a hard time believe and that John Collison is up to bat 32 counts any stink it about the owners own team. Now. I wouldn't say good that's really overplayed and get played a lot of the media. But with players I think these guys are professionals we go. They go through a lot and we go through a lot as far as the can be stuff going on about Stanley that could be tough going on off the field with kids are. Different situations. Guys are really good put in the capsule on playing baseball and that's one of the things that we talk about and spraying. Does that say that this is better than no. No effect on what we do we still get ready to play baseball we still prepare we still have to execute the game plan and things like that. So we just kind of move forward. Really without the indeed fear anything happening now what's gonna happen. DeBoer had anything in your personal life affect you during a game. I think you have to have gone like your kids are not feeling good earlier you know any situation I'll look like my mom and dad and things like that. I think Biller on your mind you know especially around the game. The one thing we always talk about is you know I focus for two hours you know for three hours put that aside go do my job. And then your back you know back to real life afterwards. So there's definitely things that that I went through that they you're dealing west. But you just have to try to put those on your mind for that period of time and do your job. We got towed at the World Baseball Classic do you take some time out of your schedule and watch the games are you into the World Baseball Classic. Well you know. Trying to catch a little you know bits of people who have been on TV here in the morning over some of the games that are gone Far East but definitely a world. You know pay attention to what's going on with our guys and what's happened at a Miami so. It's interstate. Jim Leyland told us last week that Christian yell at to possibly win the batting title. We think about that. Now I think I think Christians do star. Already just people on the and this kid's really good in the he's gonna broke out last year with the power over twenty homers last year excuse to two RBIs short of a hundred. This guys get is they go crazy so we can keep him healthy and on the field. Picture of two big things are Christians and share. Let's let's talk a little bit more about your club here OK I think I think want your strengths of not the greatest thing dear team this year really could be your bullpen I thought you guys and a really good job with a couple pick up specifically ziglar. What do you make your ball and going to season. No we we really like I cannot we like to appear in last year we also liked the death of our guys even in the minor league that are right on the edge of being here. On the milk Bratton and took all of that is mixed it gives us two different looks so the bullpen you know Brad you get a guy from down under. A lot of different looks two I was the same way come from Boston. With a split I've fastball changeup. The for the guy that gives us some different looks and we feel like were really deep out there so we get the ball over the guys who believe we will we're gonna feel pretty comfortable in the game. We intend mentioned that his first year with the Marlins he he he admitted awful it was terrible. Do you like hearing that where the guy can recognize. I was really bad and I'll wanna make should've done better this season. We look at the guys. You know who hold himself accountable. But I didn't you awful to be obsolete pitched really good at times. I think sometimes you may have left men their little bit too long not. You know not knowing knowing him. Hopefully we'll do a better job this year of making sure that we we protect him. But you do like hearing your guy's Dick Alamo and and that and claim that I got to get better. And having that feeling about their team. Now we're still a ways away but you have an idea about opening day who gets that ball. We we don't really sit down and talked about it too much we feel like any of our guys can do that well we're all. Varies among our starters but they're all kind of like the ball. At eight and one of the guys that that can handle those situations opening day is always are different kind of rhythm. And constituent World Series pitch from wild card games he's been opening day starter. You gotta kind of fit that bill will what will. Probably do this kind of match up our teams to have faith and indeed see who matches up better with the Mets for that first series and then come back we did Atlanta. Pick and elected to figure out try to match your guys that the best you can't for all three of those teams. That's essentially what you did lassie with Jose not getting the opening day start is not we did last year Tim. Holder knew more about protecting him through. When we put him second and allowed him to get extra days to rest in a lot of situations. What he was pitcher with an extra day and I allowed just keep is hitting it down we want to try to keep him I think it was a under needing to last year just because come up college on the second year. So that was all designed so he'd get the extra days to kind of look at that schedule always do season. I might start in the second data in the giving him an extra days' rest probably ten or twelve times. Now we got the more on skipper here at Don Mattingly kind of spend some time of the scene this morning Derek Dietrich had a really nice season last year I he got a lot of playing time obviously would Decourt emit the suspension. How do you make sure you find ways to get teacher could backs. Well we can and we can stay healthy it works out best for last because then we gun allows dared to play second base and allow unpleasant third base a lot of pleasant first baseline price from left field. And we would be able to use him in a situation that a lot of other guys to get their days off. And that way we hopefully stay strong throughout the course of these and stay healthy but also keep him active. And same thing for Ichiro all right I mean that you want they treat you find it that's for him here and there is walling us. Yet here and that more are free to look at him as kind of guy that. That's capable of doing all kind of different things all three spots in the outfield strategic dimension can be almost hit lefties now better than righty. He's really good off the bench is always prepared so he gives you a number of different options to the course of the year. Finally here Donna I'm I'm asking the same thing I've yeah I told Dee Gordon about it. I've brought this up to several people with the Marlins. Recently where I go back to last year okay. And it's not just baseball wise on. It's one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life okay Dee Gordon hit that home run. It you know upper deck there's no reason deportees Denny's dome on that point is like OK there's no reason that deep gorge vetoed the ball that hard. That's for it was one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life can you tell me a little bit how you experience that watching from dug out. Absolutely amazing. And I think it you know obviously. You know brought tears to a lot of people eyes because you you look at the situation. Everything that was going on than ever look back I think we're all pretty much numb at that point we were just. Didn't know emotionally drained. And and then when he does just like this for Apple's app and the reason this happened. And I think it's one of those moments where you look at me and it's hard to question there's not some type of our power yeah. Well Donna we really appreciate your time joining us here this morning best of luck this season what or open a break this stretch of no playoff appearances for the Marlins are the guys can do at this here. Right thank you appreciate your power I'd think I'd done that's the the skipper there. The Miami Marlins on Mattingly.
